Hello everyone,

I have a 80GB WD800JB that I believe has a bad PCB and I'm willing to try to change the board myself before I spend $2,000 at a professional data recovery service. I've done a lot of research and everything I've read indicates that after swapping the PCB board out it may be necessary to transfer the ROM chip from the old PCB to the new replacement one. And everything I've read states this chip is the U12 chip. I have looked all over this PCB and don't see a U12 chip. This is an older hard drive (2003) so I suspect the ROM chip is elsewhere.

Could someone help me locate where the ROM chip is on this board?

I'm not very experienced with soldiering and what not so any additional advice would be greatly appreciated.

On that board, ROM chip is U2, which is located in a bottom right corner.

hi,
take a look demo video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2hgiDHiXKM. you'd better use heat gun for this operation. or take it to repair shop this operation if you have less experience with soldering. it's cheap service even free. make sure you don't make any mistake on this operation that will save money in the future if you need Data recovery company help.
but as my experience. many customer said their drive is PCB problem with confidence when they contact me request PCB. but after he told me the symptom that i find out it's no the PCB problem. it's head. (it can be spin up and repeat making clicking noise. 3~4 times after spin down)

So I swapped out the PCB and now at least the hard drive is spinning up (it wasn't powering/spinning up at all before) but it constantly is making a loud clicking sound and after a few minutes of clicking it sounds like it powers down completely.

Any advice?

No I didn't. I was told by someone else that I shouldn't have to if the model number of the PCB (the one etched on it) is exactly the same then I shouldn't have to.

I was hoping I didn't have to swap the ROM chip cause I feel pretty inadequate in my ability to tackle that job.

I guess if it's necessary to do so I've gotta try it?

hi,
forgive find out the matching one for your drive(no need replace ROM chip PCB) as you matching with hard drive or spec only. you don't know the hardd drive or PCB ROM version and adapter. also many person repair HDD all overy the world. if they program the ROM before. how did you know that??????? so the best way is swap ROM. if you can't you can take it to repair shop for it. it just 30 seconds works. sometimes they can offer free for you.

Agreed, swap rom chip is needed, and it is easy if you have hot air gun, you could find some computer repairing shop to help you out.
