I am working on my sisters 6+ year old WD external drive that has stopped working. I removed the drive from the enclosure and attached a drive kit, and I cannot get the drive to spin up. The board near the power supply port gets very hot, but that is all.

I have been told that the drive enclosure had been dropped and an incorrect power supply attached, but nothing directly correlated to the current failure.

There is a lot of valuable information on this drive and I do not want to mess this repair up.

I'd like to believe the data is still on the platters, but this is new to me. The worst hard drive issue I've had to deal with is corrupted MBRs. What do I do?

You have to find matching PCB, swap ROM chip and see what happens...

So based on the description, swapping the boards and the rom chips should fix it?

Changing PCB would be first step in recovering your data.
